I’ve finally got around to doing what I’ve been wanting to do for a very long time. I’m opening up all the research data I have to local councils to own and update as often as you like. I know I am unable to update this data on my own any longer, especially with the increased uptake of social media by UK Local Councils.

I’ve recently decided to try my hand at compiling a list like the one created by @barryearnshaw and Glenn Taggart with @uklocalcouncils for the USA and Canada . @b3rn from the Stap isi website (Local government, the internet & community engagement online) has also done the same for Australia, @OZGovLocal and also one for Australia Councillors twitter stream @OZGovLocalClrs (similar to @CllrTweeps here in the UK) around the same time I created @USALocalGov and @CanadaLocalGov. This is a little experiment to test my theory on whether or not lists like this can help the increase in local gov twitter accounts.

Its been a while since I’ve updated this list. Much to my surprise the numbers of council on twitter has doubled since the last time I looked. Hopefully by end of the year all local councils will have a twitter account. I’m very interested to learn how you are using your twitter accounts so please do leave your comments on your experiences with twitter. Good or bad! We all want to learn form each other. And if you have any great annecdotes, why not share those too!

UK local councils tend to use fan pages rather than groups to deliver their services through Facebook. The differences between fan pages and groups are listed in the table below. This informational table was created by Authority Domains and the link can be found here.

FYI – This list was not compiled to measure a twitter accounts success by its followers, it was merely created so it can automatically update the details for me since numbers can change daily. It was an easy option to keep up to date with the data. So hope it doesn’t come across as a competition! It is just  source of information.

Reasons for conducting this observation

1. To create better practices when using twitter for local gov.
2. To create a ring of network between local councils to share information and solutions for improvement.
3. To understand how and why we choose a certain methods and not others.
4. To allow other councils to learn from each other and add on to the list if they wish to be apart of this ring.
5. To develop a standard of practice that we all can follow that is tested and proven.
6. To conduct a content analysis for my citizen engagement online research.
7. To demonstrate to colleagues and other relevant individuals of the potential or benefits of this approach to engage citizens, if any.
